Coach Clay

This blog is where I write out loud about the things I’ve been thinking, seeing, hearing and reading. You can think of it as a sort of first draft of what is currently percolating through my mind.

I am a writer, speaker, and coach; former U.S. Army Infantry Officer, a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, and a graduate of the United States Military Academy, West Point.

Free Book

I decided to release this book as a free PDF so it could easily reach as many people as possible.  Please read it and pass it on either by printing out copies or directing people back here to download it for themselves.

These are personal essays I’ve written over the years.  I deliberately kept the essays short because my intention is for you to be able to dip in and out of the book when you have a spare moment on the train, or standing in line somewhere, or just when you need a minute to call time out to reflect when your day feels hectic and out of control.

I hope the book provides you with those little moments of calm from which valuable insights grow.

Excerpt:

I remember watching a special on the 9/11 Tragedy. One of the ladies interviewed said the one thing she regretted was that she didn’t kiss her husband goodbye that morning because she had already put on her lipstick and didn’t want to smudge it, and now she would never get the chance to kiss him goodbye again.

We don’t seem to have time for life any more. We are incredibly busy trying to make a life for ourselves and our families that we don’t have time to live life, to enjoy the beauty and the magic of the ordinary, which if we took the time to look closer, we would find that the ordinary is indeed extraordinary.

As a friend of mine put it, “it would be nice if we lived in a country where everyone makes a living wage working 30 hours a week. Then we'd all have time for the rest of life - for cleaning our houses, for running our errands, for following our dreams, for volunteering, for raising our children. Why have we decided that the best thing is to make people work lots of hours, and convince them that this makes them better and more dedicated people, committed to the corporate cause?”

‘We’d all have time for the rest of life.’  That thought echoed in my head. What is ‘the rest of life?’  And when will we ever have time for it, if not now?
